Donkey Kong is the main and titular protagonist of the Donkey Kong franchise. He is a brown-furred gorilla and a member of the Kong species. Like Mario from the greater Mario franchise, Donkey Kong is one of the best known and recognizable video game protagonists. While Donkey Kong first appears in Rare's Donkey Kong Country, the name "Donkey Kong" has also been used to refer to his grandfather, Cranky Kong, who debuted in the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong. From this, it has been assumed that the original Donkey Kong's son, Donkey Kong Jr., is the father of Donkey Kong, but this connection has neither been established nor confirmed. Just before retiring, Cranky passed down the "Donkey Kong" title to his grandson Donkey Kong. However, the original Donkey Kong is often synonymous with the current one.
